The Development of Horse Racing

Horse racing is a sport in which horses, mainly thoroughbreds, run at speed with a rider on top. In a race involving standardbreds, a horse pulls a conveyance with a driver in it. It is an ancient sport and it has not really undergone any significant change over the centuries. However, it has transformed into an entertainment business from one that was enjoyed only by the rich in the olden days.   As regards the style, the distances involved in the race and the type of events, the specifications may vary from country to country, but the key feature does not change. The winner is the horse that finishes first.

Thoroughbred is a breed of horse developed for racing purposes. Thoroughbreds are a mixture of Arab, Turk, and Barb horses with native English horses. In thoroughbred racing the track used will be oval in shape. The speed and stamina of the horses will be put to test in such races. The two types of thoroughbred races are conditions and handicap races. Conditions races are very prestigious races, involving huge payouts. In handicap races, each horse has to carry a specified amount of weight based on its capability.
